“David” has worked incredibly hard for all of his 60-some-odd years. He has never had a job that didn’t involve strong muscles and calloused hands. He lives alone, and would be the first to tell you he simply doesn’t require much. Unfortunately, he is no longer able to convey messages like that, not easily anyway. David suffered a traumatic brain injury several months ago. He has been working hard on his recovery but, he hasn’t yet achieved the balance and stamina required to go back to work. His closest relative, his cousin “Jane”, has been desperately trying to help David with his rent, utilities and basic needs. When she called POM on David’s behalf she was in tears, not knowing where to turn. Neither she nor David has a computer or internet, and due to Covid, their usual location for internet needs, the library, isn’t available, which makes searching for assistance very difficult.
Our case manager reassured Jane that there are resources available for David and she would help them take the steps necessary to get the aid he needs. Upon hearing this, Jane released a big sigh, as if the weight of the world had lifted from her shoulders. The tremor in her voice was audible as the words rushed out, “Oh thank you! I just…I mean, I really don’t know how to DO this.”
Over the next few weeks, Jane and our case manager met (over the phone) several times. POM was able to help David catch up on his rent and utilities. After that they began to explore other, longer-term resources that could help David stay in his home and keep food on his table while he recovers. Our case manager logged into the various websites and while on the phone, Jane gave David’s details which we entered into the assistance applications. POM’s case managers are experts at knowing how to leverage the resources available for those who need temporary and/or long-term help (food card, social security disability, Medicaid, etc.). And, they have even creatively worked out a way to help clients apply for aid when they don’t have access to internet!
We know that David isn’t out of the woods yet. Recovery will take time. As they move forward through the next few months, Jane and David have been armed with a list of several other resources that become available once a year. Most importantly, they know we are just a phone call away. We wish to thank each of you for supporting POM with your contribution to our Neighbor in Need campaign. Your contributions will continue to change lives like David’s, giving hope to move forward, to a better tomorrow.
